Liverpool to sign £27m Perfect Gini Wijnaldum replacement who will solve Fabinho’s midfield problem

Liverpool are yet to find a replacement for Gini Wijnaldum ever since he left the club, but now they might have found an ideal candidate who could also solve the club’s Fabinho problem.

Since Gini Wijnaldum’s departure, Liverpool has been trying to find a solution to their midfield woes. Since losing the Dutchman, Liverpool has been exposed. He was the last player capable of covering for Fabinho in the holding midfield position without the Brazilian.

Jürgen Klopp has relied so much on Fabinho ever since Wijnaldum departed the team, Liverpool even rushed him back from an injury in time for him to appear in the Champions League final last year.

The repercussions from that overload have been felt this season. Fabinho has looked jaded and a shadow of the player who was once regarded as one of the best in his position. Nowadays, Liverpool’s midfield are a little disjointed and easy to exploit.

Liverpool’s midfield would benefit from having a player like Wijnaldum at his best, and the club cannot afford to wait until the summer to bolster its options if it is serious about competing in the Champions League next season.

One player who is being monitored by the club according to ‘i’ News is TeunTeun Koopmeiners, who the Reds have ‘watched in recent months’ and who was another player involved in the Dutch national team at the World Cup just like Cody Gakpo.

While at Atalanta he was required to play a little bit further forward, which reduced his defensive stats, looking at his numbers in the Eredivisie where he played in a more defensive role for AZ Alkmaar, similar to the one that would be required of him at Liverpool, Koopmeiners does show himself to be a competent defender. He has played the vast majority of his games at the club level in holding midfield.

Koopmeiners was exceptional for his ability to regain control even at the World Cup. After the group stages were over, Koopmeiners had the highest average of tackles and interceptions per 90, earning 6.88 according to FBref, for players who had played the equivalent of at least three half of football.

Also, if played in a more box-to-box role, Koopmeiners, who is skilled at scoring from long range and breaking into the box, may pose a threat on both the defensive and offensive ends. He is not just one player, but Liverpool’s midfield needs a man who can play both roles in midfield like Wijnaldum.

Koopmeiners is valued at just $32 million (£27 million/€30 million) by Transfermarkt, making him a feasible option for the Reds even in the current window. He has a great range and lots of energy that fit well with Klopp’s style of play.
