“You see the difference” – Pundit issues ‘unbelievable’ Thiago claim after major Liverpool development

Frank McAvennie has claimed Liverpool need to sign someone who can “do the graft” for Thiago Alcantara.

The former West Ham striker said exclusively to Football Insider that the Reds should have acquired Kalvin Phillips from Man City.

Tuesday’s 2-1 victory over Ajax in the Champions League saw Thiago make his comeback to the starting lineup under Jurgen Klopp (13 September).

The Spaniard is finally healthy enough to start for the Reds after missing the first game of the season due to a hamstring injury.

The 31-year-old entered the game as a substitute against Napoli in the previous Champions League matchup on September 7.

The midfielder has been omitted from the Spanish national team for their next Nations League matches against Switzerland and Portugal, as was reported by the Athletic (16 September).

Due to an injury, Thiago withdrew from the June Nations League matches.

McAvennie suggested Jurgen Klopp needs to sign someone to help out the midfielder.

“You see the difference Thiago makes, he’s an unbelievable player,” he told Football Insider.

“They need to get somebody in who can do the graft for him. That would be great. Phillips would have been ideal for Liverpool. He just sits in there and would win the ball for Thiago.

“That’s the kind of player they need if [Jordan] Henderson’s not going to be fit.

“[James] Milner’s so experienced, he’s been a great servant but it’s a young mans’ game in midfield now. Thiago is 31 but he’s got a couple of years left.“
