Three things Thomas Tuchel must fix ahead of Premier League clash against Watford
Three things Thomas Tuchel must fix ahead of Premier League clash against Watford.
Chelsea played a 1-1 home draw against Manchester United and will be in action on Wednesday night as they travel to Vicarage Road to face Watford.
Thomas Tuchel will look to bounce back to winning ways haven played two successive draws in the Premier League and there is little time to prepare, so is the case this season.
1. Which Chelsea striker will start
Chelsea struggled in front of goal against Man United with Timo Werner. The forward had six shots on target but failed to test David De Gea.
speaking after the match, Tuchel insisted the German International needed more game time.
He said: “I think that we still see he hasn’t played for a long time so can we expect that he is on the absolute peak? No, we cannot. It’s what we expect at this moment… it is not easy for him today and you can see he lacks some games and from here we go.”
Coming back from injury, Romelu Lukaku was an 82nd-minute substitute and did play more than Tuchel expected. However, Kai Havertz continues to recover from injury after missing the Blues 4-0 win over Juventus in the Champions League.
The trio have all suffered various injuries and with the quick changes, It will be difficult to know who is ready to face Watford on Wednesday.
2. How fit is N’Golo Kante?
Tuchel confirmed in his Friday Pre-match conference ahead of the weekend game against Man United, that Kante is expected to be out for at least one week.
since he was not completely ruled out of the weekend game, gives some hope that he will be available for selection for the midweek clash. However, Tuchel may choose to rest the star midfielder instead of rushing him back.
Tuchel said: “N’Golo (Kante) twisted his knee a little bit. He feels quite better since the game [against Juve] but it seems like he will be out for some days. It’s a matter of days, a matter of one week maybe. We still have a little bit of hope but it will be almost a miracle if he makes it, so we think about a week.”
3. What role will Cesar Azpilicueta play
The defender has been very reliable since he arrived at Stamford Bridge. A legend of the club.
The Spanish international plays both in the center and on the right of defence. but recently, he has not featured regularly for the team.
He has gone from making Chelsea’s first eight Premier League matches and starting in seven of them, to not being able to make it off the bench in Chelsea’s last five league matches.
Obviously, Reece James’ form has made him almost unmissable, but Tuchel has also opted for a consistent defence in recent weeks.
In the three games leading up to the international break, the German coach selected Andreas Christensen, Thiago Silva, and Antonio Rudiger at the backline, while Trevoh Chalobah replaced Christensen from the resumption of the Premier League.
It remains to be seen if Azpilicueta will extend his stay at Stamford Bridge with his current contract set to expire in the summer.
