“He’s one of the best players” – Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp left in doubt and ready to battle for £42m Transfer Target as Pep Guardiola sends fresh transfer message to the star player

Matheus Nunes’ status is clear to Jurgen Klopp, the manager of Liverpool, thanks to Pep Guardiola.

Matheus Nunes, a midfielder for Sporting Lisbon, is apparently a target for Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool after Pep Guardiola, the manager of Manchester City, gave a positive endorsement.

Despite rumors tying Matheus Nunes to Liverpool, Pep Guardiola thinks the Sporting Lisbon midfielder to be “one of the best players in the world.”

The 23-year-old international from Portugal has had a significant impact in his native country since joining Sporting in January 2019.

In 99 games, he has helped Ruben Amorim’s team win the Portuguese championship, two Portuguese Cups, and the Portuguese Super Cup.

Liverpool are reportedly preparing to hold talks with Sporting over a deal to sign Nunes, despite Jurgen Klopp telling reporters “there is no need for a new midfielder” earlier this month. Merseyside rivals Everton are also believed to be interested in Nunes.

Nunes undoubtedly has a large number of supporters, including Guardiola. The Spanish coach was eager to compliment Sporting after Manchester City’s 5-0 Champions League triumph over them last season. The second leg of the round of 16 match ended scoreless.

“Sporting are a fantastic team,” said Guardiola. “They are the champions of Portugal, which have a very strong league… they change the ball well, they have fast and intelligent players.

“I would say that Matheus Nunes is one of the best players in the world today.”

Brazil-born Nunes earned his Portugal debut in September of last year and is expected to be a member of their World Cup roster.

Brazil initially called him up, but he declined because of difficulties traveling during the Covid epidemic.

Since Georginio Wijnaldum left for Paris Saint-Germain last summer, Liverpool has been connected with a number of central midfielders.

Although Borussia Dortmund expects Jude Bellingham to stay there this summer, he is reportedly on their shortlist of potential transfers.

Speaking earlier this month, Klopp said: “How I said, if nobody wants to leave – and no player came to me with that request yet and I don’t expect it really, to be honest – there is no need for a new midfielder. We cannot just add on midfielders.

“We respect the contracts with our boys as well, that means as long as we signed them they get all our support – in training, between the sessions, during the games and between the games.

“That is the situation we have; really, you can count our midfielders.”
