Shocking Revelation: How Liverpool narrowly beat Real Madrid to sign £85m star forward
Famous Football journalist Fabrizio Romano has revealed how Liverpool beat Real to the signature of Uruguayan striker Darwin Nunez amid “passport issues”
Darwin Nunez had a real breakout season for Benfica last year, and the best clubs in Europe were quite interested in signing him.
While an £85 million price was enough to complete the transaction, Real Madrid and Manchester United had presented them with strong competition.
Although Real Madrid won the race to capture Aurelien Tchouameni and edged out the Reds in the Champions League final, Liverpool was able to secure the services of one of the best young strikers in the world.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, famed football reporter Fabrizio Romano delved deeper into the transfer saga to give us the full story of how Liverpool signed Nunez.
Nunez chose England over Spain, even though Real Madrid often secures their transfer targets.
While Nunez moving to United or Liverpool received most of the attention, the Spanish champions were left out due to the deal’s difficulties.
“It was not easy guys. Why? Because I want to reveal to you that Real Madrid were really interested after missing out on the Kylian Mbappe deal,” Romano said.
“One of the strikers wanted by Real Madrid was Darwin Nunez, but it was not possible from a passport point of view, because Darwin has no European passport.
“And with Real Madrid, it would not be possible to register Darwin Nunez if they found an agreement with Benfica, so it was impossible to complete that negotiation.”
Nunez joining Los Blancos would have been insulting to injury after Madrid defeated Liverpool to win the Champions League and signed former Monaco midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni.
The Uruguayan international came into the limelight in a big way following last season’s performance with Benfica, scoring 34 goals and providing 4 assists in all competitions.
Nunez has since teamed up with the rest of the squad as they continue preparation ahead of Preseason starting next week.
