Real Madrid latest signing Aurelien Tchouameni explains why he refused Liverpool after private chat with Jurgen Klopp

Jurgen Klopp made a concerted effort to sign Tchouameni from Monaco this summer, but his efforts were fruitless since Tchouameni had already made up his mind.

Aurelien Tchouameni claims he turned down Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp because he “didn’t hesitate” when Real Madrid approached.

Tchouameni, a French international, was at the top of the Reds’ want list, with reports linking him with moves to both Anfield and Madrid.

Tchouameni, who has been linked with Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain, and Chelsea, has instead chosen to join the European champions.

The great midfielder has headed to the Spanish city for a sum of around £68 million plus add-ons, but only after Klopp made substantial efforts to persuade him to stay on Merseyside.

Klopp made a special journey to Monaco to persuade the Frenchman to join Liverpool, and he also spoke with the midfielder on the phone.

Tchouameni was selected Young Player of the Year in Ligue 1 and has appeared in the league’s Team of the Season for the past two seasons.

With his status as a regular for France, it’s no surprise that a number of clubs were interested in signing him this summer.

The midfielder stated why he has no interest in joining any other club at his Real Madrid unveiling on Tuesday:

“As soon as Real Madrid arrived on the scene, I did not hesitate. I want to leave a mark on football and the best club for this is Real Madrid. It’s the best decision for me.”

In addition to Liverpool’s interest, Paris Saint-Germain made an attempt to sign the midfielder.

Kylian Mbappe, Tchouameni’s international partner, was at the forefront of this campaign, having turned down a move to the Spanish capital this summer.

Tchouameni explained: “Kylian decided to stay at PSG and he already knew that I was going to leave Monaco and wanted to know if I could go to PSG, but I told him I wanted Madrid and he understood perfectly.”

“When Madrid called, I didn’t hesitate and I talked about it with my family.”

When asked if Real Madrid’s great Champions League season, which included a final victory over Liverpool, influenced his decision, Tchouameni confirmed that it did.

He continued: “In the Champions League final there were already negotiations between me and Real Madrid and it is true that when I watched the games against PSG and Man City, I wrote to my agent and told him: do everything possible to take me there, please.”
