Liverpool set to pay £42m to activate release clause to sign Barcelona young midfield sensation

According to sources in Spain, Liverpool has signaled that they are willing to pay the €50 million (£42.2m) release clause in order to sign Barcelona midfielder Gavi.

In the summer transfer season, Jurgen Klopp has been aiming to bolster his midfield options, and Monaco’s Aurelien Tchouameni has been one of his main objectives.m

The Champions League finalists had reached an agreement with the 22-year-old, but it is known that the midfielder prefers to join Real Madrid, with whom he has also reached an agreement on personal conditions.

Liverpool are reportedly looking at alternatives to Tchouameni and have named Gavi as a summer target, according to Sport.

Liverpool see Gavi as a ‘huge market opportunity,’ according to the report, and are willing to pay his €50 million (£42.2 million) release clause.

Klopp is said to have been pleased by Gavi’s performances for Barcelona, with Liverpool’s scouting department keeping watch of the 17-year-meteoric old’s ascent in Spain.

Gavi’s deal with Barcelona is coming to an end.

Gavi has been offered a new contract by Barcelona, as his present one is set to expire next year.

However, Barca president Joan Laporta stated earlier this week that he was concerned that Gavi had not signed the new contract.

‘His representative has had the renewal offer on the table for a long time. We have no news that he has accepted it,’ Laporta told L’Esportiu.

Asked if the club were concerned about Gavi’s decision to not accept the offer yet, Laporta replied: ‘Yes, because we don’t understand.

‘He’s a player we all like, he is 17 years old, has a present and a great future at Barca, and we do not understand why his representative is playing and comparing.

‘I think the club’s proposal, within our salary levels, is more than acceptable.’
