Stewart Downing believes Liverpool’s new signing Darwin Nunez can be compared to Luis Suarez

Ex-Liverpool midfielder Stewart Downing believes fans ‘will love’ Darwin Nunez as he’s a ‘Luis Suárez type’ of player.

Darwin Nunez’s transfer to Liverpool from Benfica this summer was without a doubt their most exciting move. He cost the Reds a fortune, perhaps reflecting their belief that the Uruguayan represents the future of their offensive line.

Nunez, of course, follows in the footsteps of Luis Suárez, one of the best players Anfield has ever produced.

Stewart Downing, unsurprisingly, thinks Nunez can be that kind of player for Liverpool. For a few years, Downing shared the field with Suarez and witnessed firsthand the talent of former No. 7 player.

“I think watching him, the fans will love him,” Downing told the Liverpool Echo. “He has that South America style about him.

“He’s a bit like a Suarez type of player and with the crosses coming in from both sides he is going to thrive on that and the service he is going to get.

“I just see him fitting in really well and Jurge Klopp very rarely buys players that don’t fit into the way he wants to play.

“I just think he will be a great signing and he is a lot different to Mane. But you need different ways of playing and different dimensions.”

If Nunez performs even somewhat as well as Suárez did, that money will be a steal. Suárez gave some of the best performances you’ll ever see in Red. He was that good.

And the comparison helps us understand where Downing is coming from. Given that they are compatriots, it is clearly an easy decision to make, but Liverpool will be looking for a striker of that calibre.

Nunez’s chances of being as good as Suárez were quite slim right now. That is simply the case. The former Benfica striker has such potential, so Red fans should definitely be thrilled about this one.
