Liverpool star midfielder set to leave the club next summer as new contract is not guaranteed
Liverpool are not expected to offer midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain a new contract before its expiration next summer according to reports.
The 29-year-old hasn’t played all season either after getting injured, and he won’t be back until the end of October. However, given how competitive Liverpool’s midfield is, it was expected that he would only be allowed to play in cup games and make the occasional appearances.
Despite dubbing the former Arsenal midfielder “very very good” when he signed, Jurgen Klopp does not view him as a key player.
But, according to Football Insider, the club is unlikely to sell him in January since they require him as a backup.
When asked about Oxlade-Chamberlain’s future this time last year, Klopp hinted that the parties ‘wouldn’t stay together forever.
“I think it is a completely normal situation,” Klopp told the Guardian when asked about the 28-year-old’s deal.
“It is about what makes sense for both sides in six or 18 months or whatever. But it is not important at all at the moment.”
” In this moment what is important is how do you contribute when you play? That is the only thing.
“We will not stay together forever. That is how it is. If someone wants to go somewhere else we have to find a solution for it. If we want to find somebody from another club we have to find a solution for it – all these kinds of things.
“But it has nothing to do with now. It’s about how you play in the moment and then you are in the starting lineup.”
In the year he joined Liverpool, Oxlade-Chamberlain had his best season. He did a fantastic job of stepping in for the departing Philippe Coutinho in the early months of 2018. Two thunderstrikes against Manchester City in different games served as a good example of this.
After the fee was paid, he has made 133 appearances over six years and that hardly qualifies as a success. But despite his problematic nature, he will always be remembered by fans.
