Liverpool shifts attention to sign “best technical midfielder” Jude Bellingham’s alternative replacement
According to a source, Jurgen Klopp is considering Frenkie de Jong of Barcelona as a replacement for Jude Bellingham this summer.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita are both expected to leave Liverpool at the end of their current contracts, and James Milner’s future is still very much up in the air after eight trophy-filled years on Merseyside. As a result, the manager of Liverpool is expected to replace his current options in the engine room this summer.
However, Borussia Dortmund and England star, Jude Bellingham is unlikely to join the Reds this summer after Anfield officials decided to put a hold on their pursuit of the 19-year-old in favor of bolstering Klopp’s squad with a number of high-caliber additions as Liverpool look set to miss out on the Champions League spots for the first time since 2016.
A recent report from the Spanish daily Fichajes claims that De Jong could be a good option for the Reds as the lopsided La Liga leaders attempt to balance their books once more this summer. It is estimated that €200 million will need to be cut from their rapidly rising pay bill.
Due to his rise to prominence with Ajax under manager Erik Ten Hag during their run to the 2019 Champions League semifinal before securing a £65 million transfer to Barcelona in the following summer, the 25-year-old is thought to be one of the best technical midfielders on the continent. As a result, Liverpool may make a move for him.
When Ten Hag was appointed manager of Manchester United last summer, he tried to lure the Dutch international to Old Trafford. Nevertheless, De Jong made the decision to remain in Spain rather than pursue a career at Camp Nou, despite Barcelona’s eagerness to transfer the midfielder in order to approve deals for Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha, and Marcos Alonso.
Man United would turn to Real Madrid and finalize the acquisition of five-time Champions League victor Casemiro. If De Jong were to be put on the transfer list in the summer, it is not known if the Old Trafford team would attempt a second grab for him.
The Ajax academy graduate is the latest midfielder to be mentioned in connection with a summer transfer to Anfield. Mason Mount, Alexis Mac Allister, Moises Caicedo, and Alex Scott of Bristol City are other players who have been linked with a high-profile move to Merseyside this summer.
