Liverpool new signing Cody Gakpo sends heartfelt message to Reds fans in his first words after deal
Liverpool new signing Cody Gakpo has joined Liverpool in a transfer worth up to £45million and has expressed his gratitude for the reception given to him by the Reds faithful since arriving on Merseyside.
Cody Gakpo thanked Liverpool fans for the “warm welcome” he received on Merseyside in his first interview as a Reds player.
On Wednesday night, the 23-year-old attacker from the Netherlands sealed the £45 million transfer from PSV Eindhoven to Anfield. The agreement gives Jurgen Klopp the forward he wants for the second half of the season in exchange for an initial payment of £37 million and a number of add-ons.
Gakpo touched down in Liverpool on Tuesday and underwent a medical the following day before the deal was announced. He arrives after a brilliant first half of the season in the Eredivisie, where he was the top goalscorer (nine) and led the assist charts (12).
Gakpo is eager to get going, and it is believed that he will be able to make his Premier League debut against Brentford on Monday night.
The Dutchman told Liverpoolfc.com : “I’m really looking forward to [playing at Anfield].
“I heard a lot of great stories about the stadium, about the atmosphere. I cannot wait. Obviously, [my aim is] to win as many prizes as we can as a team, to perform well, to show the world what we can do as a team and what I can do as a player.
“And, personally, just to keep developing and become a better player every season. I’m really thankful that everybody is giving me such a warm welcome and I’m really looking forward to seeing everybody in the stadium and around the city.”
Gakpo’s international teammate Virgil van Dijk Dijk, who persuaded him to join the club, will be a familiar figure in the Anfield locker room. The pair helped the Netherlands’ campaign to the World Cup quarterfinals, where they lost to eventual champions Argentina in a shootout.
“I feel really good, I’m really excited to be here,” Gakpo added. “I’m looking forward to start training and start playing for this amazing club. I think this is a great club for me to come in and try to show what I can [do] and try to help the team to achieve more beautiful moments than they already did in the past years.
“I think for me, personally, it’s also good to develop here and there’s a lot of great players here [who] I can learn a lot of things from.”
Liverpool take on Leicester in the league at Anfield on Friday night before their trip to Brentford three days later. A third-round FA Cup clash against Wolves follows, which could give Gakpo the chance to make his home debut for his new club.
