In their the first leg of the Europa League match against Sevilla on Thursday, two Manchester United defenders scored own goals, and two more sustained injuries.
Marcel Sabitzer scored twice in the first 21 minutes to give the home team a 2-0 lead, giving United the impression that they were coasting.
Disaster, however, was patiently awaiting around the corner.
At halftime, Raphael Varane was replaced because he seemed to have taken a blow. Harry Maguire took over for the Frenchman, and he would go on to be very important to how the game turned out.
In the 84th minute, Sevilla got back into the game after a Jesus Navas cross was deflected into the goal by United left-back Tyrell Malacia.
A little while after, Lisandro Martinez fell without being challenged, which made matters worse for United.
Two Sevilla players helped the injured Argentina centre back off the field and onto a stretcher.
The game’s last nine minutes, including six minutes of added time, had to be played with 10 players because United had already used up all five of their substitutions.
Three minutes into extra time, those eleven men gave up an equaliser when Youssef En-Nesyri’s off-target shot hit the back of the net after struck Maguire in the head.
