Latest update on Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz injury news and return dates ahead of Man City
As the international break draws to a close, Liverpool still has a number of injury and fitness concerns.
The Reds haven’t played in a game in about two weeks; their most recent appearance was a Champions League loss to Real Madrid. The next match is a return to Premier League action on Saturday away at Manchester City.
To be able to take part in the trip to the Etihad Stadium, Jurgen Klopp will be counting on some of his injured players to achieve a full recovery. They include players like Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz, and Thiago Alcantara, while Cody Gakpo’s status is still up in the air due to his illness.
Earlier this month, when Liverpool lost to Real Madrid, Darwin Nunez sustained a cut ankle.
The striker was consequently left off of Uruguay’s roster for their international games against Japan and South Korea.
Nunez is scheduled to return for training on Merseyside later this week, and it is from that point that the Liverpool medical staff will evaluate him.
Nunez’s readiness to play Man City cannot yet be determined, but Liverpool will be hoping that he will be available for the trip to the Etihad.
At the beginning of October, Luis Diaz has been out with a knee injury; he has yet to train with the first squad.
The Colombian international had been scheduled to make a comeback in December, but a setback forced surgery and prolonged his absence.
A start at the Etihad would be unlikely given Diaz’s extended absence from the pitch, but Liverpool hopes to have the forward back in training in the days before the trip to Man City. Diaz is now getting close to returning to the pitch.
Cody Gakpo was initially withdrawn from the Netherlands squad for their Euro 2024 qualifiers due to illness.
He missed the 4-0 defeat to France, but it was later confirmed that he had returned to the squad for the match against Gibraltar.
Koeman admitted that he was unsure if he would be available for the clash on Monday night.
Gakpo will return to Merseyside this week, and it’s from there that the Liverpool medical team will make a judgement on his availability for Saturday’s clash against Man City.

Thiago Alcantara has been sidelined since early February with a hip flexor injury.
The Spaniard was yet to make a return to Liverpool first-team training before the international break, and there is still uncertainty over when he will be fit to return.
Being available for the trip to Man City is looking unlikely, so Liverpool will hope to have him return later on in April with games against Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham on the horizon.
Calvin Ramsay suffered a knee injury earlier this year and is set to spend the rest of the season on the sidelines.
Ramsay has made just two first-team appearances in his debut season at Anfield since moving from Aberdeen last summer.
Liverpool will hope to have the right-back have a patient recovery with the hope to have him return in time for pre-season training in July.
