Virgil van Dijk full of praise for defender better than Joe Gomez that Liverpool may target
The three centre-backs who are most likely to start for the Netherlands in the Qatar World Cup are vVirgil van Dijk of Liverpool, Nathan Aké of Manchester City, and Jurrin Timber of Ajax.
In his most recent starting lineup, Louis van Gaal preferred Timber above Inter Milan’s Stefan de Vrij and Matthijs de Ligt, who recently joined Bayern Munich. In Oranje’s 2-0 victory over Poland, the latter two were kept on the sidelines.
In the second half of the Netherlands’ 1-0 victory over Belgium, De Vrij came on for Timber. Both the Liverpool defender and City star praised the Ajax player.
On the 21-year-old’s fine displays, the Reds centre-back said, relayed by Soccernews: “When I was his age, I was not nearly as far as he is now. I have only praise for him. Jurriën is a great player and a real professional.
“He still has so much potential. Hopefully, he can continue to show it and develop well. Then everything will be fine.”
In the summer, Erik ten Hag was interested in bringing the Ajax defender to Manchester United, but he declined their offer.

The Red Devils are still reportedly interested in Timber, who has acknowledged he wants to switch teams after this season.
The list of potential suitors for the Dutchman is growing as Bayern Munich and AS Roma are added.
Given that Timber was praised by Van Dijk, Liverpool would want to keep an eye on his performance for the Eredivisie champions so that they might make a move for the young defender.
