Revealed: Jurgen Klopp ‘daily phone call’ as Liverpool set to seal Enzo Fernandez deal
Jurgen Klopp is “calling every day” as Liverpool work on signing a marquee midfielder in January according to Football Insider.
The Liverpool boss is taking on an even more hands-on role than normal as the Merseysiders look to bolster his squad in the upcoming window.
Benfica and Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez has emerged as a top target for Liverpool with it very unlikely they can lure first-choice Jude Bellingham from Borussia Dortmund in January.
Klopp laughed off the prospect of Liverpool signing the England sensation next month, although he made clear that the club are in the market for a new signing.
Klopp is spearheading Liverpool’s transfer business with central midfield the number one priority for a manager who wants an elite operator with his best years ahead of him.
The Anfield boss is said by sources to be “calling every day” over potential midfield signings as he looks to help get a deal over the line.
There were reports in Portugal earlier this week that Benfica had rejected an offer of £88 million from an unnamed club. Fernandez has a release clause of £105 million.
The midfielder, who has only won 10 caps for his country so far, only moved to the Estadio da Luz this summer from Argentine club River Plate.
But, his value has risen after several outstanding World Cup showings in Qatar and he played the full 120 minutes as Argentina defeated France in last Sunday’s thrilling final.
After starting the World Cup on the bench, Fernandez started to play a bigger role for Argentina as the tournament went on.
He started the final five games played by the winners, including the entirety of all four knockout matches against Australia, Netherlands, Croatia, and France. He was a substitute in the first two games.
