Liverpool confirms Darwin Nunez’s return date ahead of Chelsea clash
Liverpool are hopeful and have confirmed that forward Darwin Nunez will return to training today.
The Reds striker was again absent for the match-day squad for Tuesday night’s 1-0 FA Cup third-round replay victory over Wolves.
Harvey Elliott’s 13th-minute strike earned the Reds a narrow triumph in their third-round replay at Molineux on Tuesday evening.
Nunez, who signed for Liverpool from Benfica last summer for an initial £64 million, also missed the 3-0 loss at Brighton in the Premier League last weekend.
With Roberto Firmino, Diogo Jota, and Luis Diaz all injured, Jurgen Klopp will be desperate for as many attacking players available as possible when Liverpool face Chelsea on Saturday.
And the Uruguayan International could be back Klopp said after the Wolves win Klopp refused to answer the question directly, saying only that he expected every player to fight for a spot on the team going forward. Then he provided a happy injury update about Darwin Núñez.
“I don’t think it would be right after one game to say that’s the team for the next eight weeks or whatever. Let’s have a look. I hope that Darwin (Nunez) is coming back and training tomorrow or Thursday. He might then be in contention,” Klopp said.
“Kostas (Tsimikas) got a knock in the back, so let’s see how they recover. We have now this game and four days to train (for the Chelsea game) and after that five or six days of training until the next game. It’s always like this, it’s always about who shows up in training.
“The door is open for everybody. We have to fight and whoever is ready to fight has a good chance to play.”
Nobody wants a repeat of what happened at the weekend. Certain adjustments must be done to prevent a similar embarrassing situation against Chelsea in the future.
To see if the coach can bring out the quality in this team that has been hiding all season, it could be worthwhile to watch him play around with his system a little.
Carvalho and Elliott might not be the solution, but they must swiftly identify which player, lineup, or breakfast item is the solution.
It’s not as late in the season as it normally would be by January, but that means the games will be coming thick and fast as club football struggles to catch up with itself after the World Cup.
