“Anything is possible” Liverpool star refuses to give up on title race as Man City goes 11 points clear
“Anything is possible” Liverpool star refuses to give up on title race as Man City goes 11 points clear.
Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk insists they can still meet up with League Leaders Manchester City, despite dropping points following a 2-2 draw against Chelsea on Sunday.
The reds made the trip to Stamford Bridge in the absence of their head coach Jurgen Klopp who tested positive for covid-19.
In an entertaining 90 minutes played out in west London, with the visitors ultimately seeing the reds drop a 2-0 lead as they were made to settle for a point.
Man City’s 2-1 come-back victory over Arsenal on Saturday saw them go 10 points clear of Chelsea and 11 ahead of Liverpool who have a game in hand, which has made many believe that Pep Guardiola’s men have already won the Premier League title.
However, Virgil van Dijk thinks otherwise, With 17 games left to play and 18 for Jurgen Klopp’s side. The Netherlands international believes “anything can still happen” during the title race.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the game.“[It is] never difficult to believe,” he insisted.
“It’s a big gap, they have the title maybe to lose at the moment, but anything can happen still.
“Unfortunately, we’ve been there, where we had a gap and we were in front then we gave it away. So anything is possible.
“We all focus on ourselves, Chelsea will focus on themselves. We just have to get results, play good football and win games. It sounds pretty easy, but it’s tough as you saw today as well.”
Liverpool were not only without Klopp on Sunday, but they also missed the services of Alisson, Joel Matip, and Roberto Firmino after positive COVID-19 tests.
When asked about the performance of Caoimhin Kelleher, who was in goal for Liverpool in the absence of Alisson. Van Dijk was full of praise for the Irishman.
“I’m quite a big fan of him! He’s a fantastic goalkeeper, he’s learning from the best in my opinion with Alisson,” the defender said.
“His presence is good, he’s confident on the ball and he’s making good saves as well. That’s good. We need him right now, obviously because of the Covid cases.”
Liverpool’s next Premier League fixture is a trip to Emirates Stadium where they will tackle Arsenal on Thursday, 6th January.
