Liverpool told three curious claims about Darwin Nunez
Liverpool told three curious claims about Darwin Nunez, as pundit explains what’s holding the striker backdarwin
Darwin Nunez has been told what he must do to reverse his fortunes at Liverpool, with one pundit tripling down with three dubious claims.
With the addition of former Benfica striker Darwin Nunez this summer, Liverpool upgraded their attacking lineup. Last season, the Uruguayan scored 34 goals in 41 games and always gave it his all when playing the Reds in the Champions League.
Manchester United put up a fight, but Liverpool prevailed, securing a £64 million transfer that might eventually cost £85 million plus add-ons.
Around the same time, Man City acquired Erling Haaland, adding their firepower. Even though Nunez was the more costly player in terms of initial transfer costs, the overall cost is far higher than Nunez’s agreement due to agent fees and a massive salary.
Haaland has hit the ground running at the Etihad with 20 goals in his first 14 matches across all competitions. Nunez, meanwhile, has looked like a diamond very much in the rough and has five goals to his name in 12 appearances.
The 23-year-old has come in for vehement criticism from pundits and those on social media alike. However, he has always retained the full support of the Anfield crowd and his recent displays suggest he’s finding his feet.
McManus spoke to Football Insider and was in attendance for Liverpool’s 2-0 home victory over Rangers in the Champions League.
He stressed Nunez simply has to score more goals to turn his fortunes around, though, with three goals in his last 233 minutes of action, the stats suggest he’s already doing just that.
“I don’t think it has helped, coming in at the same time as Haaland,” said McManus.
“We all remember the Community Shield game when Nunez scored and Haaland didn’t. Liverpool fans were thinking they had gotten the better deal out of the two of them.
“When you pay that amount of money for a striker, say £100million, you expect them to score every week. They have to play and score every week.
“It’s not quite happened for him. He didn’t play great against Man City when he came on but getting the winning goal against West Ham will give him confidence.
“He looked sharper and I think that goal might just be a weight off his shoulders in terms of setting goals.
“There is plenty of competition for places at Liverpool so he needs to keep going. I think it’s great for him that he got the winning goal and the headlines.
“He is obviously a very good player. I was actually at Anfield for the game against Rangers and you could just sense that the fans were getting on him when he missed a few chances.
“I think the only thing he can do to turn it around is score goals.”
