Liverpool’s most recent Champions League campaign got off to a terrible start as they were destroyed 4-1 by Napoli in their opening Group A match.
The Reds, who were eliminated from the competition last season after reaching the finals, fell far short of the criteria necessary to advance after being defeated by vivacious opponents in Naples.
Piotr Zielinski’s penalty conversion in the fifth minute gave Luciano Spalletti’s team an early lead, but they missed another chance shortly after when Victor Osimhen was stopped by Alisson.
Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa and Giovanni Simeone increased their advantage to three goals before halftime, despite their disappointment.
After the restart, Zielinski quickly seized another, making Luis Diaz’s nearly instantaneous response ineffective.
It may be too soon for Liverpool to start freaking out about their chances of making it past the group stage with five games still to play.
However, a record of three victories, three victories, three ties, and two defeats the most recent occurring in a comprehensive manner across all tournaments is troubling and should set off warning bells.
