Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp blasts Antonio Conte’s ‘game plan’ after title race blow
Tottenham put up a strong fight at Anfield, taking the lead through Heung-min Son and keeping Liverpool at bay until the 74th minute. The South Korean’s tap-in was flawless, putting him just two goals behind Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah in the hunt for the Golden Boot.
Speaking after the final whistle, Klopp told BT Sport: “The dressing room is not flying in this moment. But come on, something like this can always happen. There are other games to play, we just have to keep going.
If Spurs had stolen it at the death, Klopp’s not-so-subtle jabs could have been much more overt. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg had a fantastic chance to do just that, but instead of shooting for the bottom corner, he tried to steer his point-blank header back across the goal.
It remains to be seen whether City can respond to a rare incident of Liverpool dropping points. They will be coming off a humiliating Champions League semi-final loss to Real Madrid, which left Pep Guardiola and his team stunned after they blew a two-goal lead with just minutes remaining.
While performances may not always result in titles, Klopp preferred to focus on the positive aspects of his team’s performance against Spurs. “I’m particularly pleased with the performance and proud of the spirit we showed against an incredibly well-prepared opponent,” he said.
“We had to win and they sat back to do counter-attacks. The counter-press was absolutely outstanding. Not the result we wanted, but the performance we wanted and from that point of view I’m fine.”
