Pep Guardiola takes a dig at Liverpool after regaining Premier League top spot
Manchester City reclaimed first place after a 5-0 thrashing of Newcastle United, less than 24 hours after Jurgen Klopp’s team dropped points against Tottenham Hotspur.
The Spaniard decried the fact that “everyone in the country favours Liverpool” and even claimed that the media was rooting for Jurgen Klopp’s side to win the Premier League.
He claimed that Liverpool’s rich history is what makes them popular, but he also took a cheeky swipe at their lack of Premier League success over the last three decades
“Everyone in this country supports Liverpool, the media and everyone, of course, because Liverpool has an incredible history behind in European competition,” Guardiola said
“Not in the Premier League, because they’ve won one in 30 years – but it’s not a problem at all. The situation is what it is.”
He continued: “The people want Liverpool to win more than us. It’s not an issue. It’s normal. Maybe they have more supporters all around the world and in England may be more support for Liverpool than for us.
“Liverpool, alongside Manchester United, are the most famous team, with what they have done in history in terms of titles, legacy, history, drama – for many, many things. But we are, for the last 10, 11, 12 years, coming there. I know we’re sometimes uncomfortable, but I don’t care.”
Citizens bounced back from their stunning Champions League semi-final loss to Real Madrid on Wednesday with a 5-0 victory over Newcastle, with goals from Raheem Sterling, Aymeric Laporte, Rodri, and Phil Foden separating the two teams.
Liverpool had been on City’s tail for weeks, having cut the gap to just a point last month, but after failing to overcome Antonio Conte’s Tottenham at Anfield last night, the momentum has swung back in City’s favour.
