6 possible results that can lead to Man City vs Liverpool Premier League title play-off
The Premier League title race swung Manchester City’s way at the weekend after they moved three points clear of rivals Liverpool, after an emphatic victory over Newcastle United.
Jurgen Klopp’s side could only draw at home to Tottenham on Saturday evening as City made them pay with a 5-0 victory over Newcastle.
Those results put City three points clear and are now four goals superior in terms of goal difference.
If City wins their final three games, they will be champions. But don’t we all desire a thrilling title race?
Nothing would be more spectacular than a 39th game title play-off between Manchester City and Liverpool.
But if you think the results suggest a play-off is no longer possible, you’re wrong.
With only six games remaining to play, it’s much more realistic.
Here is a look at the calculated most likely outcomes for Liverpool and Man City to end with the same number of points, goal difference, and goals scored – and, of course, the same head-to-head record after two 2-2 ties.
“If two clubs cannot be separated by operation of Rule C.17.1 and C.17.2, a play-off on a neutral ground, the format, timing and venue of which shall be determined by the board”.
The results needed for a title play-off between Liverpool and Man City
Tuesday, May 10: Aston Villa 0-2 Liverpool
Wednesday, May 11: Wolves 1-2 Man City
Sunday, May 15: West Ham 1-0 Man City
Tuesday, May 17: Southampton 0-2 Liverpool
Sunday, May 22: Liverpool 2-0 Wolves
Sunday, May 22: Man City 2-0 Aston Villa
How the final table would look
1st. Liverpool – Pl: 38 | F: 93 | A: 23 | GD: 70 | Pts. 92
1st. Man City – Pl: 38 | F: 93 | A: 23 | GD: 70 | Pts. 92
Liverpool must come back from their 0-0 draw with Tottenham with a win over Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa on Tuesday night in order to put pressure on City once more.
Klopp insists he isn’t given up on the title just yet, ahead of the encounter at Villa Park.
“Why should we stop believing?” he said.
“I am not sure I said [the title race is still on] because it is obvious. We both have 3 to play, my concern is how can we win our games. We shouldn’t add on points before games are played.
“It’s easy to describe our situation. We drew, they won, the goal difference too. We can decide for ourselves how we see it. There are some facts but I try to help the boys see it like me.”
