Darwin Nunez, 23, was signed by Liverpool from Benfica last month, and the club is hoping he can make an immediate impact.

According to Trent Alexander-Arnold, there was excitement among Liverpool’s first-team players when rumors of Darwin Nunez moving to Anfield in the summer started to spread.

Last month, Jurgen Klopp’s team completed the acquisition of the Uruguayan forward after reaching an agreement with Benfica on a transaction that could have cost up to £85 million.

The 23-year-old received criticism from opposing fans following his first two preseason performances for Liverpool, but he responded forcefully by scoring four goals in a 5-0 victory over RB Leipzig last week.

As the new Premier League season approaches and another title battle with Manchester City is unavoidable, the Reds will now be hoping such form can be duplicated.

Nunez and the rest of Klopp’s players share the same excitement among Liverpool fans about what they can do for the first team this season.

Alexander-Arnold has acknowledged that he closely followed transfer rumors involving the towering forward and felt “excited” while imagining Nunez playing for the team.

“When we played him, we knew he was a special player,” the Reds’ right-back told Sky Sports.

“He scores a lot of goals, gets himself in good positions, will work hard and fight for wins – and that’s what we need and expect when we bring players in.”

“That’s the club mentality, and I think he will slot in. Over the years there has been a few signings where, when the club is linked to them, us players get excited and we’re like ‘Yeah, he will work for us’. This was definitely one of them.”

Reflecting on last year and what may be in store on this occasion, Alexander-Arnold added:

“We nearly made the impossible, possible. We took it as far as you can. We never crossed the line with two of the trophies but we’re proud of what we did and we know we can improve.”

“I’m excited to get back, start up again and get going. I’m sure it will be an exciting season.”
