Thibaut Courtois, who tormented Liverpool in the Champions League final the previous season, continues to frustrate the Reds. This time, he made a strong stop to deny Cody Gakpo.
Before his opponent Alisson made two outstanding stops at the other end, the Belgian stopped an early shot from Darwin Nunez at the Bernabeu.
When James Milner curled a diagonal ball into the Real Madrid penalty area in the 36th minute, Nacho only managed to half-clear it before it landed at Diogo Jota’s feet.
Gakpo was in the open to his right when he was discovered, and the Dutchman used just one touch to center himself before launching a strong drive that Courtois deflected for a corner.
It was one of Liverpool’s better moments in a first half which ended 0-0, with the Belgium netminder again proving a hard man to beat.
