Liverpool are interested in signing Marco Asensio, a 26-year-old Real Madrid midfielder who is looking for a way out this summer.

Liverpool are interested in the playmaker, according to a newspaper report from Mundo Deportivo. During his tenure with Madrid, Asensio’s inherent talent and ability have proven tough to overlook. He possesses the same innate talent as many of Liverpool’s other engine room players.

However, he has been inconsistent during his tenure with Madrid, starting more than 20 LaLiga games in a season only once in his six seasons with the club due to injuries and bad form.

However, nothing has been progressed as of yet because Liverpool has other midfield transfer targets, the most important of which being Barcelona’s Gavi, who is available for £42.5 million this summer.

Asensio and Gavi aren’t the only midfielders on Liverpool’s radar. After an excellent two of seasons with PSV, Jude Bellingham has been linked with a move to Merseyside, while the Reds are also thought to be among a number of clubs interested in PSV’s Ibrahim Sangare. Prior to joining Real Madrid, Aurelien Tchouameni was also being chased.

Although he is far from a sure starter at Anfield, securing the signature of a player like Asensio might stoke Keita’s fire, with the added competition giving extra motivation.

The transfer of Asensio to Liverpool is unlikely to be finalised this summer. Nonetheless, it demonstrates Liverpool’s willingness to sign a new midfielder this summer.

Liverpool fans may have to be a little more patient with their midfield chase now that their club has rushed quickly to sign a forward.
