Paul Merson delivers his honest verdict on Liverpool FC’s summer signing
Paul Merson explains why he believes that one of the best transactions of the summer was the acquisition of Fabio Carvalho by Liverpool FC.
Paul Merson has lauded Liverpool FC for their acquisition of Fulham’s Fabio Carvalho, calling the young player a “great talent” after his transfer.
The Merseyside club wasted no time in spending big ahead of the new season, and the 19-year-old is one of three new players to have arrived at Anfield thus far this summer.
Given the attacking talent available to Jurgen Klopp at Anfield, winger Carvalho is unlikely to start right away for Liverpool FC, but he will undoubtedly be a valuable addition to the Reds’ roster.
The Under-21 Portugal International made an impact for Fulham in the Championship last year, contributing eight assists and 10 goals in 36 league games to enable the Cottagers finish first and which guaranteed their return to the Premier League.
Former Arsenal player, Merson has revealed that he is impressed with Liverpool FC’s transfer activity this summer and believes Carvalho will be a great addition to the Merseyside club.
Writing in a column as he showers praises on his top signings of the transfer window so far, he said;
“Fabio Carvalho is not someone who will start from week one for Liverpool, but this guy is a top talent and played a big role in Fulham’s promotion bid last season.
“Jurgen Klopp just makes players better and I personally like his eye for talent. He did something similar with Harvey Elliott last season and the kid was playing unreal football before his injury against Leeds United, so I expect Carvalho to play an important role for Liverpool.
“I think this is the kind of signing other managers might look at and think, ‘Why didn’t we get him?’ because he’s a fantastic talent.
“I’m not sure, but my best guess is that Carvalho will start off as an attacker before eventually being transitioned into midfield.
“You look at the likes of Jordan Henderson and Thiago Alcantara and realize that Liverpool’s midfield is running on its last legs, so I’m sure there’s some kind of succession plan already in place.”
Carvalho, a Portuguese native from Torres Vedras, began his youth career at Benfica before transferring to Fulham’s academy in 2013. Before deciding to play for Portugal’s Under-21 team, he first represented England at the Under-16, Under-17, and Under-18 levels.
