Watch: Jamie Carragher makes honest admission about Darwin Nunez transfer fee and reveals strongest Liverpool line up with new signing

Following the Reds £64 million plus add-ons signing for Darwin Nunez, Liverpool icon Jamie Carragher said that the Reds were in desperate need of attacking reinforcements.

The 22-year-old has established himself as one of Europe’s best strikers this season, scoring 34 goals in 41 games for Benfica.

A number of major European clubs, notably Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain, have taken notice of his eye-catching performances (per the Manchester Evening News).

Jurgen Klopp’s Reds, on the other hand, were willing to meet Benfica’s demand for £64 million in cash up front. If add-ons are unlocked, the purchase will be worth £85 million.

This would smash the club record fee of £75 million paid for Virgil van Dijk by the Reds in 2018.

When asked about the transfer, Carragher was candid, telling Sky Sports (via LiverpoolEcho):

“Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp normally get their recruitment right certainly when they spend big. The figures we’re talking – that’s what they spent on the goalkeeper and Van Dijk and they made a huge difference.”

Sadio Mane, the Liverpool striker, appears to be on his way out of Anfield, with a deal to Bayern Munich on the cards. Carragher made a reference to the news when he said:

“Liverpool right now do need to refresh their front line because of the age of that front three who have been absolutely fantastic over the last four or five years for Liverpool.”

“It is sad to see it broken up in some ways but it had to come to an end sooner or later. And with Sadio Mane looking like he’s going to move on, Liverpool had to do something and he’s the one they’ve identified.”
