Darwin Nunez responds to Manchester United’s interest as Liverpool intensifies chase

Uruguay forward Darwin Nunez remains set on joining Liverpool this summer and is reluctant to engage in hearing about other options.

According to Portuguese source Record, the Red Devils are still interested in signing the Uruguayan, despite their league rivals appearing to be ahead in the race for his signature.

Last season, the former Penarol striker had a fantastic season in the Portuguese top division, scoring 34 goals in 41 appearances (across all competitions).

Erik ten Hag was claimed to have met with the 22-year-old’s agent, Jorge Mendes, who is assisting with a move to England, to suggest a change of direction in negotiations, though this has since been denied.

Nunez, among other options, is a target for the ex-Ajax manager in his effort to speed up his new club’s rebuilding process, though it would appear to be a difficult feat, to say the least, considering the versatile centre forward’s preference for a move to Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp’s team, according to Romano, has been ‘watching’ the forward ‘for a long time.’ In a column for Caught Offside, he wrote:

“As of today, Liverpool are leading the race for Darwin Nunez, still waiting to get the deal done. The next few hours will be crucial to understand if Liverpool and Benfica will complete the deal.”
