Jurgen Klopp says that Jude Bellingham, a star for Borussia Dortmund, can be “Liverpool’s Erling Haaland” if he joins the club next summer.

However, the coach also notes that his team is “light in midfield” this season.

If he joins Liverpool next summer, Jude Bellingham might become the club’s Erling Haaland, but the Reds might pay for not signing a midfielder this year.

Jude Bellingham is Liverpool’s top target

Bellingham, 19, made his breakthrough with Borussia Dortmund and England and is now regarded as one of the top young stars in football.

He appears destined to spend a third season in the Bundesliga, which might make things difficult for Liverpool, who have been heavily connected with the former Birmingham City star and are now dealing with injury issues in the middle of the field.

After suffering an opening-day injury in a 2-2 draw with Fulham, Thiago Alcantara is anticipated to be sidelined for four to six weeks. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita were both absent from the game.

There won’t be any more transfers before the window ends, according to manager Jurgen Klopp, since “it only makes sense if it’s the right player.” Some feel Bellingham will be that player next year.

Manchester City endured a similar wait for Haaland, but it appears to have been worthwhile now that the Norwegian is in terrifying form after scoring twice on his Premier League debut against West Ham.

Despite the fact that Klopp has alternative options available to him, talkSPORT hosts Ray Parlour and Trevor Sinclair believe that waiting to take action could be costly.

“I do feel they’re a little bit light in midfield,” said Sinclair.

“They’re talking about Jude Bellingham next summer and they probably won’t do anything because they’re probably going for him next summer.”

Parlour added: “If they can get Bellingham next year that will be like Haaland going to City, the wow factor because he’s going to be a top player.

“I know Thiago’s a very important player but they’ve still got options in midfield, [Harvey] Elliott, he could get a starting place, [Naby] Keita coming back, Fabinho’s going to be very important.

“[James] Milner is another option, he can come in and do a job for anybody, but it is a blow, Thiago.”

Klopp has indicated Elliott will be relied upon after signing a new deal

“I’m happy with the strength and quality of my squad,” he said. “But we have injuries, that’s how it is.

“The question is how long the players are out and there are different solutions. One is transfer market, but only makes sense if the right player.

“All the other solutions are inside the squad, we definitely have too many injuries that is clear.

“Naby will be back on Monday. Kostas [Tsimikas] will train today for first time, might be back.

“If we had the right solution then we would have done it already. We are not stubborn.

“If we look at the right player and there would have been opportunity, then we would do it and would have done it.

“We have had a lot of conversations but it doesn’t look like [it will happen].”
