The Reds are reportedly interested in signing the 25-year-old, who was strongly linked with Manchester United throughout the summer, as they attempt to bolster their midfield depth using the midseason transfer window.

De Jong was often sought by United, but ultimately chose to remain at Barcelona in order to compete for a spot at the Nou Camp this season.

Though he has only started four league games since the start of the season, he is now reportedly more open to the prospect of leaving Barcelona because of playing time

According to Sport, Liverpool has now joined the fray for De Jong’s services and may formally indicate their interest in the player in January.

After praising his international teammate back in June when he told NOS Sport:

“Frenkie… well, he always plays well in my eyes,” it appears like Van Dijk would be ready to welcome him at Anfield with open arms.

The Reds need midfield reinforcements badly in order to salvage what little hope they still have of winning the Premier League, thus it is unclear whether they will be successful in their pursuit of De Jong.
