Former Dortmund star admits he should have joined Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool

Former Dortmund and Bayern Munich star Mario Gotze has disclosed he should have joined Liverpool in 2016 when presented with the opportunity.

The German returned to Dortmund from Bayern Munich six years ago, but his injury nightmare prevented him from reigniting his form at Dortmund.

The 29-year-old, is well known for scoring the extra-time winner for Germany in the 2014 World Cup final against Argentina. But he is a long way away from that these days although impressive in PSV’s midfield.

After doing well in his three years at Bayern, albeit as part of a rotation option, he returned to Dortmund, but a metabolic disease, along with groin and ankle problems, prevented him from returning to his best form.

He left Dortmund for the second time in 2020 to join PSV, with his career on the downward trend. But he has sort of rejuvenated form this season, scoring 11 goals and 10 assists in 45 games.

Looking back on his career, Gotze confirmed he could have gone to Liverpool when he returned to Dortmund, after speaking with Jurgen Klopp. He says he does not regret his actions but admits he should have moved to Anfield.

Speaking  “We are still in touch and we spoke back then about me coming to Liverpool,” Gotze said told the Daily Mail in 2016.

“I should have joined Liverpool for sure. I just made a wrong decision but it’s not a regret.”

Gotze will be in action when PSV faces Leicester at the King Power on Thursday, in the Conference League.
