Fabrizio Romano tips Liverpool to beat Manchester United for the signature of £70m star
Despite Manchester United being the favourites to sign Dutch international Cody Gapko in January, Fabrizio Romano predicts Liverpool will step up their interest in the forward.
Speaking to CaughtOffside, the Italian journalist hinted that Liverpool could soon intensify their efforts to sign Gakpo, who has been one of the breakout stars at the 2022 FIFA World Cup with the 23-year-old scoring in every single game for the Netherlands during the group stages.
As a result, interest has magnified greatly for Gakpo in the past few weeks. However, it appears that Liverpool’s Premier League rivals United remain the favourites to sign the PSV superstar, though Voetbal Primeur report that the winger could now cost as much as €80m (£70m) in January.
Following a World Cup, such price hikes are typical. Gakpo, though, is currently having a fantastic season with PSV at the club level, so clubs like Liverpool and United would have needed to offer a huge sum of money to lure the forward away from Eindhoven in 2023.
In fact, there is an increasing competition to sign Gakpo. The journalist also claims that the Reds have sent scouts to observe the PSV talisman, which might strengthen Jurgen Klopp’s team’s interest in trying to sign Holland’s newest star forward.

CRomano said: “Liverpool have sent their scouts to PSV games to monitor Gakpo, they did the same with Kudus for example;
“it’s a normal kind of interest but there is still no meeting scheduled between agents and Liverpool as of today. For sure, with this kind of super performances, interest is growing.”
Given that the Reds spent much on Darwin Nunez in the summer and players like Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz have been on fire this season, one could argue that attack is Liverpool’s last remaining problem.
However, any opportunity to outperform United in the market is worthwhile, particularly when a guy like Gakpo is involved.
The Dutch forward has established himself as a phenomenal talent at this World Cup and has the capacity to rise to the top of the world’s game.
