Darwin Nunez jets off in “few hours to seal deal” as Uruguayan Journalist drops latest update
Liverpool are close to completing the signing of Darwin Nunez, who is set to miss Uruguay’s international duty to complete the deal.
The Reds appear to be closing in on a deal for Darwin Nunez, with recent reports suggesting they have won the race to sign him.
The 22-year-old has established himself as one of Europe’s most lethal young forwards, netting 32 goals in all competitions for Benfica last season.
Following a new report from a journalist in Uruguay on Friday, it appears that the Uruguayan is moving closer to being a Liverpool player all the time.
Diego Jokas, a local Uruguayan reporter and radio host, took to Twitter to reveal that Nunez would miss Uruguay’s clash with Panama in order to fly to Liverpool and finalise the deal:
“Darwin Nunez would not be in Uruguay tomorrow and the intention is that he will travel in the next few hours to be able to sign with LFC for 80 million Euros plus 20 in bonuses.”
Last season, the young striker showed his brilliance by scoring both at home and away against the Reds in the Champions League, with a particularly brilliant performance at Anfield prompting Virgil van Dijk to list him alongside Lionel Messi as one of his toughest opponents.
Nunez’s goal record in Portugal indicates he has the potential to be the next great Liverpool attacker, following in the footsteps of past South American greats such as Luis Suarez and Luis Diaz.
The fee could be high, but if he lives up to his expectation, it could end up being a steal, as was the case with Virgil van Dijk when he cost £75 million in January 2018.
