In a stunning 6-3 derby-day thrashing of Manchester United, Erling Haaland and Phil Foden each scored a hat-trick for Manchester City.
After his heroics against Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest, Haaland became the first player in Premier League history to score a hat-trick in three straight home games.
This one will stick in the mind longer, as Foden, a lifelong City supporter, finished off his claim to the matchball after Antony’s magnificent goal temporarily lessened the pain of United’s 4-0 halftime deficit.
With a late brace—his second coming from the penalty spot—substitute Anthony Martial restored some pride, but it was still a home game for City, who were able to slip one point behind league-leading Arsenal and inspire dread throughout the Premier League and beyond.
When a player of De Bruyne’s caliber can pick out Haaland to head home a corner in the 34th minute and then produce a trademark curling delivery for the striker to slip in behind Raphael Varane for a sliding finish, United carried a threat on the break but were careless in possession and flimsy in defense, a terrible combination.
