Arsenal ensured they stayed top of the Premier League table and kept their perfect start to the season intact with a dominant 2-1 win over Aston Villa.
Mikel Arteta’s team has now won five straight games, and with two points separating them from Manchester City at the top of the rankings, Gabriel Jesus and Gabriel Martinelli once more emerged as the match’s heroes.
Steven Gerrard’s misery was made worse by Arsenal’s joy as they suffered their third straight loss and only one victory in their last five games, dropping them to 19th place with few positives to take into the game against City that would follow.
In a dominating performance, the Gunners had 60% of the ball and 22 shots to Villa’s four.
The visitors’ equalizer by substitute Douglas Luiz from a corner in the 74th minute was the only time it appeared vulnerable.
However, this Arsenal team isn’t going down easily anymore, and less than two minutes later Martinelli had them back in front when he tapped in Bukayo Saka’s cross at the back post to join his Brazilian teammate Jesus on the scoresheet.
On the half-hour mark, Martinelli had been the first to react to an Emiliano Martinez parry to open the scoring..
