According to The Times, Jurgen Klopp and Virgil van Dijk were instrumental in persuading Benfica forward Darwin Nunez to join Liverpool.

The Reds are expected to complete a deal with Benfica for an initial fee of £64 million, according to reports. Klopp’s side might also pay the Portuguese club £12.8 million in add-ons based on appearances and another £8.5 million based on the team’s success as part of the arrangement.

Liverpool is preparing for its medical tomorrow in the hopes that everything will be finalized today. Nunez is now in Madrid and is expected to sign a six-year contract.

According to the aforementioned source, Nunez will begin his medical with the Premier League giants on Monday. The 22-year-old is now in Spain, awaiting approval to finalize his lucrative transfer to Liverpool.

Nunez might become the Reds’ most expensive signing in franchise history if the transaction goes through. If the add-ons are activated, the overall sum will be more than the £75 million they paid Southampton for Van Dijk in 2018.

The fact that Nunez will not be among the club’s top earners is reported to have influenced the Reds’ decision to pay such a large amount for him.
