“Many teams are better than us”- Virgil van Dijk gives reasons for Liverpool’s poor start to the season
Following Liverpool’s draw with Brighton, Virgil van Dijk was pressed to explain why the red have been performing at their best this season.
Speaking with the club’s website, the 31-year-old was asked if there was a hangover from the last campaign and said: “No, no, not at all, there is no hangover from that. Teams obviously are getting better,
“we play in the best league in the world where all the teams are able to compete with each other.
“We have to get back to that consistency and play with joy and freedom but it all starts with doing it together and working hard”.
It’s simple to assume that the players must be worn out from these efforts because Jurgen Klopp’s team has never had anything to play for on the last day of the season.
There is undoubtedly some truth to these remarks as well, but it seems odd that everything would result in such a decline in performance this season.
The Dutchman has been a major factor in the Red’s prior victories and will take responsibility for this recent slump in performance.
The No. 4 is a leader in the locker room as well, and given the numerous difficulties in the defence, he will be taking responsibility for the leaky defensive concerns.
The Reds have a responsibility to deliver the performances and entertainment that the fans were accustomed to last season.
Hopefully, Jurgen Klopp’s side will turn things around as the season progresses, a win over Rangers in the UEFA Champions League may be all that is needed to turn things around this time.
