Liverpool set to replace Divock Origi with £30m teenage star ready to be sold by club
Liverpool are reportedly ready to bring in Divock Origi’s replacement in Reim’s youngsters Hugo Ekitike.
Liverpool’s squad is currently very well stocked with senior attacking options. However, it’s fascinating to wonder who their next young hotshot could be.
With Divock Origi out of contract this summer, Liverpool may be looking for someone who can make a more direct impression in Jurgen Klopp’s squad next season. The Reds have already been linked with Getafe’s Enes Unal, and now they’re said to be showing interest in one of Europe’s top-scoring teens.
As per Goal Liverpool are part of a group of clubs looking to sign Reims striker Hugo Ekikike. Their story includes quotes from club president Jean-Pierre Caillot (via Europe 1) making it clear that he expects the 19-year-old to continue this summer.
“In Hugo’s case, he would waste time staying with us,” he said. “We refused an offer of €35 million this winter, which is a lot of money for a club like ours.
“That money will be used to grow and improve the club. Hugo will be allowed to go, and he’s probably going to leave.”
Ekitike only has two years remaining on his contract, it’s a reasonable time for Reims to sell. Newcastle United are also reportedly favourites, having held talks in January, but his talent is clear for all to see.
He is the joint-top scoring teenager across Europe’s top five divisions. Ekitike was in great form before suffering a bad hamstring injury in a 1-1 draw with Brest in February, with five goals and an assist in the nine games before that fateful match.
It remains to be seen if Liverpool will move for Ekitike in the summer or go for other options to fill the void that will be left by their cult hero Divock Origi.
