Liverpool news: Virgil van Dijk to Man United transfer claim made as Cody Gakpo suffers blow

Due to the international break, Liverpool’s pursuit of a top-four Premier League finish is now on hold, but that hasn’t stopped some intriguing rumors regarding a number of the Reds’ Dutch stars.

In an effort to restart their season, Liverpool will try to make the most of the current international break.

The Reds have had a terribly frustrating season thus far due to their inconsistency.

They are now seven points behind Tottenham in fourth place in the Premier League but have two games in hand.

Whilst there will not be a lot going on at Anfield over the next week or so until the Premier League resumes, that does not mean that Liverpool players aren’t making the headlines. With that being said, take a look at the standout news from Merseyside below:

Glazers turn down Van Dijk move
Whilst Virgil van Dijk has been a hugely successful signing for the Reds, he could have instead been turning out for fierce rivals Manchester United instead – had Jose Mourinho got his way.

Popular presenter Chris Kamara recently revealed that he suggested that the Red Devils should make a move for the Dutchman.

A move did not happen though due to the finances at Old Trafford. Speaking on the BBC’s Proper Football Podcast, Kamara said: “I can exclusively reveal that I told Jose [Mourinho] to take him to Manchester United and Jose said ‘these lot won’t give me the money for him.’ And he went to Liverpool.”

Van Dijk eventually went on to sign for Liverpool in a £75m deal from Southampton in January 2018.

Gakpo sent home from Holland squad
From one Dutch Liverpool star to another now as Cody Gakpo becomes one of five players sent home from the Netherlands squad after a virus outbreak ahead of the start of their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign.

The Dutch FA have confirmed that the former PSV star has been released from the squad ahead of the matches against France on Friday and Gibraltar on Monday, with Newcastle defender Sven Botman also sent home with the illness.

Liverpool’s flight back from Newcastle in February was between 25 and 30 times worse for the environment than driving. The Reds won 2-0 at St James’ Park with Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo getting on the scoresheet before Nick Pope ’s red card.

They then flew back to Liverpool, something that has been looked closely at by BBC Sport in a long-running investigation of 100 matches involving Premier League sides.
