Liverpool begins talk to sign Gakpo’s International teammate with possible Anfield reunion
According to reports Liverpool have contacted the representatives of Atalanta midfielder Teun Koopmeiners, with the Dutchman an international team-mate of new Reds signing Cody Gakpo.
Gakpo became the first signing for Jurgen Klopp’s side in the January transfer window and made his debut against Wolves in the FA Cup on Saturday.
It wasn’t the perfect debut for the Dutchman, as Liverpool were held to a 2-2 draw at Anfield against Wolves, but it did represent the first opportunity for the Anfield crowd to see their new player in action.
Speaking to the club’s official website after the game, Gakpo said: “Really good atmosphere [from the crowd].
“For my own game, I think I showed some good moments and some sloppy moments. So I can also still improve on those points and keep working and try to help the team as much as I can.
“Of course, you learn the most when you’re playing games, so I’m looking forward [to more].”
Latest reports, he may be joined by compatriot Koopmeiners at Anfield in the near future if the supposed talks go to plan.
The Reds were reportedly considering signing Koopmeiners earlier in January after watching the 24-year-old midfielder on different occasions as a potential replacement for Borussia Dortmund star Jude Bellingham, according to iNews.
This occurred in the wake of The Telegraph’s claims that Dutch-born Reds assistant Pep Lijnders had been exerting an “increasingly important influence” over the transfer process at Anfield.
According to recent reports from the Italian publication Tutto Atalanta, Liverpool has approached Koopmeiners’ representatives in preparation for a possible bid.
Additionally, it is alleged that the player may be available for £35 million, which is just a little less than the first stated £37 million sum spent to bring Gakpo to Anfield from PSV.
The midfielder, who joined Atalanta in 2021, has 16 Serie A appearances under his belt with four goals and three assists.
He had previously scored 15 goals in 31 games for AZ Alkmaar of the Eredivisie, so he would undoubtedly give Liverpool’s midfield a more offensive edge.
