Jurgen Klopp forced to change Priority as Liverpool dealt shocking blow
Liverpool Premier League title race suffered a setback following a 1-0 shocking loss at Leicester City on Tuesday night.
Jurgen Klopp’s men failed to find the back of the net for the first time in 29 Premier League games.
The defeat was only their second of the season, but the nature of the Premier League title race means that any points dropped could prove disastrous.
With Manchester City’s dominance evident, it means that nothing short of a victory is good enough to keep up the pace at the top, and Tuesday’s 1-0 loss at King Power stadium means the Reds are already six points behind the leaders halfway through the race.
That gap will increase to 12 points if City defeats Brentford on Wednesday and Arsenal on Saturday, so Liverpool’s trip to Chelsea on Sunday will make or break their title chances.
However, Jurgen Klopp insists his team must focus on the present rather than where the trophy will end up in May.
“It’s a big gap [to City]. At this moment it is not my problem,” the Liverpool boss told Amazon Prime
“If we play our normal football, Liverpool football, we have the chance to win more football games. A defeat is a defeat. We have to learn and we will.
“The first thing is not to do it ever again like this. We lost our rhythm and weren’t calm enough to get it back. That’s our fault.”
Klopp admitted that he has an obvious problem that needs to be fixed, and none are as disturbing as Sadio Mane’s sad form over the past month.
Mane is yet to score or assist in nine outings and it was clearly evident as he lacked the confidence against Leicester City.
Mohamed Salah will bear most of the blame for the loss thanks to his first-half penalty miss, but Mane missed an equally brilliant opportunity to put Liverpool ahead shortly after the break.
The Egyptian shot well over the crossbar from the penalty spot with only Kasper Schmeichel to beat and minutes later Ademola Lookman scored on the other end to give Leicester the lead.
Mane could hardly have asked for a better service from Diogo Jota and it was confusing to watch him fire over when the bottom corner was wide open for a quiet finish.
It was the kind of opportunity he would have easily tucked away earlier in the season when he scored seven goals in the first 11 games of the season.
But the fact of the matter is that Mane is shot of confidence and Klopp’s headache will only grow when he leaves for AFCON after this weekend’s battle at Stamford Bridge.
