“I take responsibility” Andy Robertson reacts following Red card in Liverpool’s 2-2 draw against Tottenham
Liverpool defender Andy Robertson has claimed responsibility for his red card against Tottenham Hotspur but said it was better if he did not talk about the other incidents that happened on the night.
Robertson was heavily involved in the 2-2 draw between Tottenham and Liverpool on Sunday. He assisted his team’s first goal with a cross for Diogo Jota and scored the second.
The Scotland international was shown a red card for a poor challenge on Tottenham full-back Emerson Royal following a VAR review.
The post-match conversation has been dominated by the referee’s decision on the night. Robertson has not divided opinion too much, but the fact that Harry Kane was not sent off for a challenge on the Scotland captain in the first half has raised doubts.
Robertson has now broken silence on what happened, hinting at his club’s dissatisfaction with the Kane incident, but took the blame for his red card.
Robertson posted on his Instagram “I was brought up to take responsibility when you’ve done something wrong and I have to admit my challenge was poor and misjudged. My mistake giving them the chance to make the decision. Gutted!
“Probably best I don’t speak about the other things in the match, other than to say how proud I am of the rest of the team. Me aside, the boys were in a different class in unbelievably difficult circumstances.
“Support unreal as well in difficult times! Wish we could have rewarded it with a win!”
Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp agreed with the dismissal of Andy Robertson but insisted Harry Kane should have been sent off for his foul on Robertson.
“You can give Robbo a red card. It is not the smartest challenge but that is definitely a red card. No doubt about it.
“His leg was in the air, it was pure coincidence. Harry cannot judge it. If Robbo’s leg is on the ground it is a broken leg.
“We have a VAR sitting there and he thinks have a look again at Robertson. Fine, that’s what he is there for. But what did he do in that situation?”
