How Liverpool performed in the just-concluded January transfer window
Liverpool spent the cash in the January transfer window and also saw a number of players leave Anfield as Jurgen Klopp improved his squad ahead of the second half of the season.
The Reds may not have been the busiest club in the Premier League in the January transfer window, but they certainly made a splash.
The former Premier League champions only brought one player to Anfield, spending £50m on Porto winger Luis Diaz.
The 25-year-old will boost Jurgen Klopp’s chances of winning three trophies this season, with Liverpool still in the race to win the Champions League in the final of the Carabao Cup against Chelsea and also not ruling out a Premier League title challenge.
So, now that the January transfer is over, Klopp can assess his new-look squad after one arrival and four departures.
unfortunately, Liverpool’s last-minute deadline day bid for Fulham star Fabio Carvalho collapsed, despite the two clubs reaching an agreement.
The Reds will hope to seal a deal for the 19-year-old in the summer.
Incomings
Luis Diaz – Porto, £50m
Outgoings
Tony Gallacher – St. Johnstone, released
Morgan Boyes – Livingston, released
Liam Hughes – Stalybridge Celtic, loan
Nathaniel Phillips – Bournemouth, loan
Klopp shared his thoughts on Liverpool’s latest addition. The German tactician revealed they’ve been tracking the forward for a while now and is delighted to finally acquire his services. He told club’s official website:
“I could not be happier that we’ve been able to get this deal done and bring Luis to Liverpool. I have always been a believer in only signing players in January if you would want to sign them in the summer, and that’s very much the case with Luis.
“He is an outstanding player and someone we’ve been tracking for a very long time.
“We believe he has everything needed to fit into our way and adapt to the Premier League, both physically and mentally.
He added. “He is a player who is hungry for success and knows you have to fight to get what you want. He is a fighter, no doubt. He’s a skillful team player who always has the goal in mind.”
Jurgen Klopp also revealed that he was impressed with Diaz when Liverpool face Porto in the Champions League group stages earlier this season.
He said, “This team deserved to add quality and when we played against Luis earlier this season, we saw what a danger he is, how fast he is and how his mentality was to help his team.”
