“A big problem” – Former Liverpool star criticises Klopp for being “loyal” to some players amid Reds transfer woes
Liverpool boss, Jurgen Klopp has been criticised by former Reds player Jose Enrique for his loyalty to key members of his squad.
Liverpool had a horrible season. The Reds are now in ninth place in the Premier League, seven points off of a spot in the Champions League, and about 21 points behind league leaders Arsenal.
In the meantime, Klopp’s team has been eliminated from both domestic cups and was drawn against Real Madrid in the round of 16 of the Champions League, a rematch of the last year’s Champions League finals.
Cody Gakpo, a winger from PSV Eindhoven, was the only player the Reds acquired during the January transfer window for a sum of £45 million.
Numerous supporters and commentators have expressed dissatisfaction with the club’s immobility following years of success as Klopp ruled out late transactions in the January window.
Enrique, who played under Klopp in the manager’s first season at Anfield, claimed the German has been “too loyal” to Liverpool’s current contingent.

The retired left-back also stressed the club as a whole had not improved the team at key moments in the past few years.
Speaking to BestGamblingSites, Enrique said: “I think Klopp has been a bit too loyal to certain players.
Pep Guardiola spoke about it not long ago which we can see with the way [Joao] Cancelo has left Manchester City, it’s the same problem.
“Other than that – not improving the team when you are doing well. In football you can’t win all the time, especially considering the spending of the top teams.
“But Liverpool have to be up there trying to compete for trophies. That’s the sad thing, after last season where we fought for every trophy possible whereas this season Liverpool are struggling to get in the top six.
“It’s because the team this year is actually worse than last year – this shouldn’t happen.
“So a big problem was not improving the team when it needed to be improved, and now they have a big problem because you have to fight for a higher position in the table.”
