AI predicts Premier League champions between Liverpool and City ahead of the new season

Prior to the 2022–23 season, Liverpool have been tipped to defeat Manchester City and win the Premier League.

According to an update from Opta’s prediction model on Twitter, the Reds have a 49.7% chance of unseating the current champions, who have been given a 47% chance of keeping their title.

Liverpool missed out on winning the league title when a resurgent City team defeated Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa on the final day of the campaign, cutting their chances of completing a domestic treble by one point.

Although data used in football has undeniably increased, season predictors should always be taken with caution.

With such small margins separating the Reds and Pep Guardiola’s team, the race could come down to injuries, pointless draws, or having key players at home during the winter while the World Cup is on.

However, you can assume that Liverpool and City will be at the summit of the table perhaps a little less clear of the chasing pack.

In what will certainly be another closely contested title race, the potential benefits of a second preseason session, as mJurgen Klopp would refer to it, cannot be underestimated after what was an emotionally and physically taxing campaign for Mo Salah in particular.
