In Nathan Jones’ first game in command, Liverpool defeated Southampton 3-1 to end the World Cup break on a winning note.
Roberto Firmino’s free-kick header gave the Reds the advantage in the sixth minute, but Che Adams immediately tied the score.
However, Darwin Nunez scored twice before halftime, ending Saints’ aspirations of pulling off an Anfield smash and grab on their new manager’s debut.
Despite a strong second half effort by the visitors, who lost and dropped into the bottom three, that is how it ended.
