Bruno Fernandes proved to be Manchester United’s match winner, scoring the only goal of the game in the victory against Southampton on Saturday.
As new manager Erik ten Hag tries to have United playing in his own style, a clean sheet and an away victory was another historic occasion.
Manchester United after their 2-1 victory over Liverpool on Monday night at Old Trafford.
In spite of United’s lack of effort and quality compared to five days prior, Fernandes’ goal in the 55th minute was enough to defeat Southampton 1-0 and give them back-to-back victories for the first time since February (188 days.)
Although United were somewhat at ease, if not particularly good, as the home team strove in vain to get an equalizer, goalkeeper David de Gea was required to make one outstanding save in the second half to stop Joe Aribo.
Southampton had lost six of their previous eight home games in all competitions, and they appeared to lack offensive firepower, but this was more of a test of United’s effort and attitude than anything else, and on that front, they succeeded.
Although the Ten Hag era is still in its early stages, another victory would give him greater confidence going into Thursday’s match against Leicester City.
