Former Arsenal defender Bacary Sagna has revealed how he struggled with mental illness during his playing days in the premier league.

The Former Gunner defender Bacary Sagna was once regarded as the best left-back in the premier league, he departed the Emirates stadium after 6 years with Arsène Wenger’s side.

As part of premier league mental health awareness drive. Bacary Sagna has revealed that he didn’t play with free mind and could have done better and more decisive either with Arsenal or French national team.

The onset of his mental health began when he lost his brother in February 2008, recounted Sagna, the 37-year-old stated that nothing went right anymore, due to the pain he suffered.

“I fought hard to come back over the summer. Being named in the PFA Team of the Year for my first season gave me lots of confidence but when I came back, everything became slow. Sagna told Arsenal.com

“I struggled to focus and I made mistakes. I was not myself and I knew I could perform better.

“It’s hard to describe but nothing felt right. In my head, I knew exactly what I could bring to the team but my body couldn’t do it. he added

“Some days I would feel like a robot. I used to drive there and not even remember the way I went.

“I never spoke to anyone about it. People who know me know that I’m naturally quiet. It’s not in my nature to show off, I would turn up, train, give me best and then if I have to step forward, I will. But I’m naturally quiet and I would never ask for help.”

The ex- France International left Arsenal in 2014 on a free transfer to Manchester City where he spent three seasons before leaving in 2017.

Sagna is currently without a club but has not out playing football again once the suspension of foot games is lifted amid the coronavirus pandemic.
