Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, CEO of Bayern Munich, has confirmed that Bundesliga giants want to acquire Dayot Upamecano from RB Leipzig.

It looks like Bayern will fall short in the back, with the general expectation that David Alaba will be on his way to Real Madrid when his contract expires at the end of the season.

Alaba’s departure has not been settled yet, but it looks like Bayern will act quickly to bring in a top-level replacement, with Upamecano one of the most highly regarded young defenders in the world.

The 22-year-old is nearing 100 Bundesliga appearances for Leipzig since moving from Red Bull Salzburg in 2017, and made his senior international debut for France last year.

Rummenigge speaking on Bild Live said that Dayot Upamecano would stay in Leipzig at least until the end of the season, so it was too early to say he would definitely join Bayern

“We will of course handle it, not only with this player, but in principle,” said Rummenigge, “in the positions where we want and need to do something.”

The Bayern chief also noted that it was well known that Upamecano has a release clause in his Leipzig contract. He signed a new deal until 2023 last year, with a clause reportedly worth around € 45 million.

“In the time of Corona, the money situation is also an important factor,” added Rummenigge.

Bayern are four points ahead of second-placed Leipzig at the top of the table, after both sides had narrow victories on Wednesday.

Rummenigge, however, refused to be involved in such speculation.

“Jerome plays an important role again. The coach is happy with him, ”he said. “Accordingly, you will have to ask him this question yourself when you speak to him.”
