Roy Keane claims David De Gea lacked “courage” in Manchester United’s draw with Everton, but still believes Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side will finish second behind Manchester City this season.

United lost a two-goal lead at Old Trafford and ended up drawing 3-3 with Carlo Ancelotti’s side after Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s late goal in injury time.

Solskjaer’s side remain in second place after the draw, but are five points behind leaders Manchester City, who still have a game ahead of them after their 4-1 win over Liverpool on Sunday night.

But Keane believes United will end up being the closest to City, which he predicts to be champions this season.

“I’m really surprised, we weren’t thinking in the last 12 months that United could challenge Manchester City, but I think they will be the best of the rest,” Keane told Sky Sports.

“They are disappointed with last night losing some points but they still scored three goals, I still think they will finish second, those closest to Manchester City will finish.

“Listening to Ole and the latest performances and the goalkeeper last night … they probably don’t think they can challenge City. And if you don’t think you can do it, chances are you won’t.

“But they are capable of scoring a lot of goals. It’s not great, but we said that after the game against Arsenal a few weeks ago, we didn’t have that feeling of watching the game with that group of players.

“Obviously when Ole said it last night, he didn’t feel like they were ready to win the league. I think if you play for Manchester United and you are close to the top, you must believe that you can win the league title.”
